The Pongola Court in KwaZulu-Natal has convicted Sibusiso Siyaya on 21 counts of culpable homicide.
Siyaya appeared in court and apologized to the families of the students and teachers who died when the coal truck he was driving collided with a minibus on the N2 in Pongola in 2022.
The driver claimed that the company he worked for never contacted him after the incident and that the truck was in poor condition.
“I am deeply sorry for this tragedy. If I had not been born, these people would still be alive,”
Siyaya tearfully stated in court. His sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024.
