Authorities have confirmed the identity of the 33-year-old man who tragically died after being locked in a cold room at a Shoprite store in Ratanda, Heidelberg.
The victim has been identified as Wandile Shabalala, and a picture of him has been released to the public.
Shabalala was reportedly accused of stealing chocolate from the store. According to local residents, individuals caught stealing are typically detained in the cold room for only 30 minutes.

However, it appears that Shabalala was left in the cold room overnight. His friends, who were also apprehended, managed to escape, leaving him behind.
Shabalala’s body was discovered outside the Avbob premises this morning. The community is in shock and mourning as they grapple with the circumstances surrounding his death.
