Tongaat, KZN – A tornado wreaked havoc in Tongaat, KZN, yesterday afternoon (Monday), leaving a trail of destruction, damaged homes, and displaced residents. The aftermath of this devastating event was captured by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) and posted online this morning (Tuesday).
The tornado caused significant damage across several areas in Tongaat, leading to 76 callouts for assistance with flooding, structural collapses, and medical emergencies. Numerous vehicles were damaged by flying debris, and the community is reeling from the impact of this natural disaster.
Tragically, an adult female and a minor child lost their lives in separate incidents of structural collapse in Sandfields, KZN. Authorities have reported that a third person was killed after an informal home collapsed, although officials are still attempting to access the area and confirm this information.
16-Month-Old Child Killed in Structural Collapse: Sandfields, KZN
In one particularly heart-wrenching incident yesterday afternoon (Monday), a 16-month-old baby was killed and her twin sister was seriously injured when a wall collapsed at their home during the heavy storms. Authorities received multiple calls for assistance on Zondi Street in Sandfields, KZN.
Upon arrival, officials found that a lounge wall had collapsed, crushing both children and their mother. Residents quickly removed the injured from the rubble, but unfortunately, one child sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The surviving twin sister and their moderately injured mother were rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Additionally, a 39-year-old woman tragically lost her life in another structural collapse during the storm that hit Tongaat on Monday afternoon.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at a residence on Rama Drive, where a wall had collapsed on the woman. Upon arrival, officials cleared the debris and retrieved her body, but she had sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities are still confirming the total number of fatalities, injured, and missing people as the community continues to assess the full extent of the damage and loss caused by this catastrophic event.
