Capitec Bank successfully restored its banking channels following a significant disruption caused by a global IT outage involving key technology service provider, CrowdStrike.

Despite the widespread nature of the outage, Capitec Bank reassured customers that their bank accounts were not compromised.

“Our clients’ bank accounts were not affected in any way,” stated a Capitec spokesperson. “Service remains our top priority.”

The disruption, which began around 7 AM, resulted in thousands of users being unable to access Capitec’s online services.

The issue was quickly addressed by Capitec’s technical teams, who worked diligently to restore full functionality within a few hours.

“Our teams acted quickly and restored our banking channels within a few hours,” added the spokesperson.

Reports from Downdetector.co.za had indicated a spike in complaints from users during the outage.

However, Capitec’s swift response minimized the impact on its customers.

The global IT incident was traced back to a problem with CrowdStrike’s services, primarily affected Windows computers, causing blue screen of death (BSOD) errors.

Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator, Michelle McGuinness, confirmed that the issue was not related to a cybersecurity incident but rather a technical fault with a third-party software platform.

Affected companies included major banks such as Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Westpac, ANZ, Bendigo Bank, and Suncorp Bank in Australia and New Zealand.

Other sectors impacted were supermarkets like Woolworths, media organizations including ABC, Sky News, and Network 10, as well as major US airlines and telecommunications companies like Foxtel and Telstra in Australia.

CrowdStrike acknowledged the issue and assured that their technical teams were actively working to resolve the problem. They advised users to stay updated via their official channels for the latest information.

As Capitec Bank resumes normal operations, customers are encouraged to continue monitoring official updates and reach out to customer support for any ongoing issues. The bank remains committed to providing reliable and secure services to its clients.
