The Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court has denied bail to Lungelo Samkelo Nkosi (26), who is facing three counts of murder and attempted murder.
Nkosi is alleged to have been the driver of a vehicle used by three hitmen who remain at large.
On 15 May 2024, the victims were traveling in a blue vehicle on Mngomezulu Street, Atteridgeville, when another vehicle driven by Nkosi blocked their car.
Three men exited Nkosi’s vehicle and opened fire. While the driver of the blocked car managed to escape unharmed, the other three passengers were shot. Two men died at the scene, and the third succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

Nkosi was apprehended hours after the incident when he attempted to file a false hijacking report at the police station.
He was identified by the driver of the blue vehicle, who was also at the station to report the shooting.
In court, Nkosi denied the allegations through an affidavit, stating his intention to plead not guilty. He claimed employment as a taxi driver and requested bail to continue supporting his family, including his 11-month-old child.
Prosecutor Rhulani Maluleke opposed bail, arguing that Nkosi committed a serious offense and that the state had a strong case against him. Maluleke emphasized that Nkosi had misled the court regarding his involvement in the crime.
Magistrate Anita Johnson denied Nkosi’s bail request, citing his dishonesty and the strength of the state’s case.
She concurred with the prosecution that Nkosi failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances that would justify his release on bail in the interest of justice.
The case has been postponed to 04 June 2024 for Nkosi’s first appearance in the regional court.
