Sibusiso Mtshali, a 29-year-old man from Vosloorus, known by the moniker ‘hitman’, was sentenced to two life terms for 2 premeditated murders.
The court also imposed an additional 15 years for three attempted murder charges, six years for possession of a firearm, and three years for possessing ammunition.
The case dates back to May 19, 2019, when Mr. Mtshali, accompanied by two associates, stormed the home of Convency Lawrence Twala, a taxi operator in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit.
During the attack, Mr. Twala was killed instantly, while his friend, Kagiso Zachariah Rampou, succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Two other friends sustained injuries but survived.
Following an extensive police investigation, Mtshali was arrested and initially appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on March 24, 2022, facing another murder charge.
He was held in custody after being denied bail.
Despite initially denying the charges, Mtshali later implored the court for leniency, citing his young age.
However, the prosecuting attorney, Advocate Sipho Lalane, highlighted Mtshali’s lack of remorse for his actions, emphasizing the deliberate nature of traveling from Johannesburg to Bronkhorstspruit to commit the murders.
“This was a premeditated act, traveling to the victim’s residence to execute the crime at their home,” stated Advocate Lalane, underscoring the severity of the offenses.
