KZN: Umkomaas Beach Incident Update
On July 15, 2024, a young man involved in an altercation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Umkomaas Beach was scheduled to appear in Scottburgh Court.
The charges against him included Common Assault, Defeating the Ends of Justice, and Disarming a Police Officer.
According to the local councillor, the SAPS officers involved in the incident were from the King Shaka Airport precinct in the Durban North Cluster, which is located three clusters away from the South.
The father of the young man provided alarming information regarding the incident.
He stated that at the time of his son’s assault and arrest, no fish were found in his possession.
Additionally, the young man had his fishing license on him and was unarmed.
Despite being set to appear in court around 11:00 am, the prosecution decided not to pursue the charges, leading to the case being thrown out.
The young man’s parents, though deeply traumatized by the event, expressed their relief at having their son back home.
The young man is currently being taken to the district surgeon for an examination, after which further action will be initiated against the state.
The councillor commented,
“We are glad that the courts have justly applied their minds and ended the ordeal of the young man.”
