Four Arrested in Musina for Poaching, Ivory and Pangolin Confiscated

Musina – Four individuals were arrested in Musina on Tuesday, accused of illegal hunting and possession of poached animal products.

Authorities seized six pieces of ivory tusks, weighing approximately 17 kg, with an estimated street value of R650,000. A dead pangolin, an animal highly sought after in the illegal wildlife trade, was also recovered during the operation.

The arrests were part of Operation Vala Umgodi, a concerted effort by the Border Policing unit to combat cross-border crimes.

The operation has significantly intensified its focus on disrupting the illegal wildlife trade, which poses a severe threat to biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region.

The operation achieved another milestone in curbing illegal activities along the border. A ferry, believed to have been used for smuggling illegal immigrants and counterfeit goods across the Limpopo River near the Beitbridge Border post, was seized from an unauthorized harbor.
