Funeral Policy Fraud Leads to Multiple Arrest

In Potchefstroom, two individuals, ages 29 and 40, are slated for a court appearance at the Ottosdal Magistrates’ Court on charges of alleged fraud.

Their arrest was executed in Ottosdal on 6 February 2024 by members of the North West Anti-Gang Unit and Commercial Crimes Unit, connecting them to a fraud investigation initiated in September 2022.

The case unfolded when one of the accused impersonated a 64-year-old man, collaborating with the other to take out a funeral policy.

The scheme came to light following the murder of Itumeleng John Ngakaemang, 64, who was found dead from stab wounds and strangulation at his home in Letsopa Location on 25 September 2022.

Further inquiry led to the arrest of Dorothy Moleleki, 47, alongside three others, tying them to Ngakaemang’s murder.

It emerged that Moleleki, aiming to benefit from funeral policies fraudulently obtained with Ngakaemang’s identity, orchestrated his murder with her accomplices.

Moleleki, known locally as a loan shark, exploited the vulnerability of Ngakaemang, her client. She utilized his documents to fraudulently open policies in his name, enlisting the younger suspect for this purpose and hiring Theuns Hayman, 37, and Mike Phutiyagae, 53, to carry out the murder.

Her fraudulent claims were made to four different companies. The arrest of these suspects in January 2023 brought charges of conspiracy to commit murder and fraud, particularly against Moleleki.

The involvement of the 40-year-old suspect, who worked at a local bank, was also confirmed in the fraudulent activities.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, has commended the dedication and relentless efforts of the Anti-Gang Unit and Commercial Crimes Unit in achieving these arrests.
