In a significant law enforcement success, the South African Police Service (SAPS) anti-kidnapping task team has apprehended fourteen individuals, including three Chinese nationals and two Mozambicans, in connection with the kidnapping of a Zimbabwean businessman.
The incident took place near the victim’s workplace on Sunday.
The swift response of the anti-kidnapping task team, bolstered by various SAPS units and private security firms, resulted in the safe recovery of the kidnapped victim by Monday afternoon.
He was found alive at a location in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Following an intensive investigation, the task team managed to trace and arrest the fourteen suspects at different locations.
Eight suspects were detained at an apartment in Greenstone Park, while the remaining six were arrested in Sandton.
Among the recovered items were multiple speed point machines, a significant amount of cash withdrawn from the victim’s account, and two firearms, one of which had been reported stolen during a house robbery in Linden in 2023.
This operation underscores SAPS’s ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping syndicates preying on businessmen for ransom.
Recently, the SAPS has thwarted several such kidnapping attempts, highlighting their commitment to combating this menace.
The SAPS urges the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb these criminal activities.
