Police Intensify High-Density Operations in Durban, Resulting in Multiple Arrests and Seizures

Durban, South Africa – To reduce contact crimes and enforce the law, police in the Ethekwini District have ramped up high-density operations.

This intensified crackdown, aimed at confiscating illegal firearms, drugs, and shutting down unauthorized taverns, saw significant successes last night.

A combined force from the Ethekwini District, National Intervention Unit, K9 Unit, and Metropolitan Police coordinated operations in several areas, including Point, Durban Central, Umlazi, Sydenham, and Marianhill.

Their efforts yielded substantial results, highlighting the ongoing commitment to maintaining public safety and order.

Major Bust in Point Area – While patrolling the Central Business District (CBD), officers intercepted a foreign national who could not produce documentation verifying his status.

He led the police to a bottle store in the Point area, where a significant breakthrough occurred.

Inside the manager’s office, police discovered another foreign national counting a substantial sum of money, approximately R110,000.

Further inspection revealed 379 pink and white capsules, believed to be Ecstasy, with an estimated street value of R22,740.

Additionally, officers found 32 cellphones, three laptops, three tablets, and three passports, indicating potential stolen property.

The 36-year-old individual was promptly arrested and detained at Point SAPS on charges of drug possession and possession of stolen goods.

Other Notable Successes –  The operation also led to several other significant seizures and arrests:

  • Firearms and Ammunition: A 9mm firearm with six rounds of ammunition was found abandoned.
  • Gas Guns: Four gas guns were confiscated.
  • Undocumented Foreign Nationals: Six individuals without proper documentation were detained.
  • Illicit Cigarettes: Police confiscated 98 cartons of illegal cigarettes.
  • Traffic and Bylaw Enforcement: A total of 56 bylaws and traffic fines were issued.
  • Contravention of the Second Goods Act: One arrest was made under this act.
  • Illegal Taverns: Two unauthorized taverns were shut down.

The collaborative efforts of the police units underscore the district’s relentless pursuit to combat crime and enhance community safety. By targeting the generators of contact crimes, law enforcement aims to create a safer environment for all residents.

These operations are part of an ongoing strategy to ensure that illegal activities are curtailed and perpetrators are brought to justice. The police urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
