ZWELITSHA, Eastern Cape – A 62-year-old security guard has been arrested following a tragic incident at Matafeni Junior Secondary School in Lusikisiki, where a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot and another injured on the evening of Thursday, 23 May 2024.
According to reports, at approximately 18:30 on Thursday, a group of about seven children entered the school premises at Mantusini A/A, Ntshamathe Locality in Lusikisiki, intending to access the school’s Wi-Fi.
Upon encountering the security guard, the children attempted to flee. The guard allegedly opened fire, striking two boys.

Tragically, one of the boys, aged 13, died at the scene, while the other, also 13, sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The security guard fled the scene but was apprehended later that evening. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm with the serial number filed off, and illegal possession of ammunition.
He is scheduled to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 May 2024.
