Phoenix, KZN – members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) recovered a stolen bakkie, originally taken from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGMH) in June 2024.

The swift response and thorough investigation by RUSA officers have once again highlighted their commitment to combating crime in the region.

Earlier today (Thursday), RUSA Reaction Officers received a tip-off about an Indian male attempting to sell a white Ford Ranger on Facebook Marketplace.

The vehicle, valued at R170,000, was being offered for a suspiciously low price of R40,000.

This significant price discrepancy raised red flags and prompted immediate action.

Upon receiving the information, Reaction Officers swiftly followed up on the lead. They discovered that the bakkie had been stolen from MGMH in Phoenix while the 63-year-old owner was collecting medication from the dispensary.

The vehicle had been purchased from an auction just three weeks prior to the theft.

RUSA officers kept the area under observation for several hours, demonstrating patience and diligence.

Their efforts paid off when they eventually located the abandoned bakkie on an unnamed road in Cornubia.

The suspect, described as an Indian male, had parked the vehicle and fled the scene, evading capture.

Upon inspection, the vehicle’s identification marks, chassis, and engine numbers were confirmed to match those listed in the Phoenix Cas 91/06/2024 report, verifying that it was indeed the stolen bakkie sought after by authorities.

While the bakkie has been recovered, the suspect remains at large.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the individual involved.

Community members are urged to report any suspicious activities to the police to aid in the ongoing investigation.

The successful recovery of the stolen bakkie by RUSA underscores the importance of community vigilance and the efficacy of rapid response units in combating crime.

The commitment and coordination demonstrated by the officers involved have once again ensured the safety and security of the Phoenix community.
