A teacher at Bangibizo Primary School in Mthwalume has been charged with injuring a student after sending children to open a car radiator, resulting in one child being scalded by the water.
The Luthuli family from Makhoso, Mthwalume, is enraged after the incident left their 9-year-old son with facial burns.
They are particularly upset that the school attempted to cover up the incident by claiming the child spilled boiling water on himself from a kettle in the teachers’ staff room.
The truth was only discovered upon visiting the hospital.
Nompumelelo Blose, the boy’s grandmother, mentioned that the child is now frightened to go to school and insists on justice for the unintended harm at school.
Muzi Mahlambi, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, expressed deep sympathy for the family affected by the incident and hoped for a resolution between the family and the teacher.
Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed that a case of injury has been opened and is currently under investigation.
