Durban, KZN – A heated argument between a young couple in New Road, Cato Crest, Durban, has resulted in a devastating fire that left two families homeless and a young child without essential belongings.

The incident, which occurred yesterday early morning (Saturday), has shocked the local community and raised concerns about domestic disputes escalating to dangerous levels.

According to witnesses, the altercation between the couple escalated quickly, leading to the boyfriend setting their two-room shack ablaze.

The fire, fueled by the dry conditions and close proximity of neighboring houses, rapidly spread to the adjacent home. The neighbors’ house was completely engulfed in flames, leaving them with nothing but ashes.

Among the victims is a seven-year-old girl, a Grade 1 student, who lost all her clothes, school uniforms, and stationery in the fire.

The child’s family is now grappling with the loss of their home and the immediate need to replace essential items for the young student.

Emergency services responded promptly, but the fire had already caused extensive damage by the time they arrived.

Firefighters battled the blaze and managed to prevent it from spreading further, but the destruction was already done.

No injuries were reported, but the emotional toll on the affected families is immense.

We heard loud arguing and then saw flames. It was terrifying,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.

The fire spread so quickly, and there was nothing we could do to stop it. It’s heartbreaking to see the little girl without her school things.

Local authorities are investigating the incident, and the boyfriend has been taken into custody for questioning.

Charges are expected to be filed as the investigation progresses. The community has rallied around the affected families, providing temporary shelter and gathering donations to help them rebuild their lives.

Ward Councillor expressed deep concern over the incident, urging residents to seek help if they find themselves in volatile situations.

“This tragic event highlights the importance of addressing domestic issues before they escalate. We must support each other and ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” the councillor stated.
