In an operation spearheaded by the Western Cape Provincial Detectives’ Serious and Violent Crime Investigations Unit in the early hours of Thursday, February 15, 2024, law enforcement authorities made a breakthrough resulting in the apprehension of a 37-year-old male suspect and the confiscation of a cache of firearms and ammunition.
The operation unfolded with the execution of a search warrant at a premises located in NY5 Gugulethu. Upon entering the premises, officers found the suspect present and initiated a thorough search.
The search yielded alarming discoveries, with law enforcement recovering four rifles accompanied by 123 rounds of ammunition, alongside four 9mm pistols alongside 150 rounds of ammunition.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspect lacked the requisite licenses for the possession of firearms and ammunition, prompting his immediate arrest on charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The suspect is slated to face judicial proceedings at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court following formal charging procedures.
Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile, the Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, commended the diligent efforts of the law enforcement personnel involved in the operation.
Patekile underscored the critical importance of such operations in curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms, which pose a severe threat to the safety and security of communities in the Western Cape.
