Woman from Ballito Sentenced to 18 Years for Drowning Daughter Due to Stress

A woman from Ballito, eThekwini, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of her daughter.

The court heard how the mother, overcome by stress and a sense of hopelessness, drowned her young child by submerging her head in a bucket of water until she suffocated.

The accused, whose identity has been withheld to protect the family’s privacy, confessed that she was struggling to cope with the significant changes in her life circumstances.

Her husband had previously held a well-paying job that required frequent international travel. However, when he lost his job, their lives took a drastic downturn, leading to severe financial and emotional stress.

During the trial, the woman explained that her initial plan was to end her own life. She believed that her daughter would suffer if left behind in a life filled with hardship and uncertainty.

This led her to make the horrifying decision to kill her daughter first, believing it to be an act of mercy.

“I thought it would be better for her to die with me rather than to live a life of suffering,” she said in her statement.

Despite her initial intent to commit suicide, the woman did not follow through after killing her daughter. Instead, she was found and arrested, leading to the court proceedings culminating in her sentencing.

The judge acknowledged the emotional and psychological turmoil the woman was experiencing but emphasized that the deliberate act of taking a child’s life could not be justified under any circumstances.

The 18-year sentence reflects the crime’s severity, while also considering the mitigating factors presented during the trial.
