Zimbabwean Truck Theif Nabbed in Major RUSA Sting Operation in Durban

Durban, KZN – In a major breakthrough today, a truck driver linked to a syndicate involved in truck theft has been arrested following an intelligence-driven operation by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).

The suspect, a Zimbabwean national, was apprehended after allegedly stealing a truck and removing its tracker before dumping it in KwaMashu.

According to sources, the driver was hired to collect a load but instead deviated from his route, removing the truck’s tracking device and discarding it in KwaMashu.

The truck and its load went missing, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement.

A businessman from Shakaskraal, KwaZulu-Natal, reported the theft to the South African Police Service (SAPS) under case number KwaMashu CAS 373/06/2024.

He revealed that the suspect had a history of securing employment with various trucking companies across multiple provinces, only to vanish with the vehicle and its cargo shortly thereafter.

RUSA officers, leveraging information and intelligence, discovered that the suspect was collaborating with several foreign nationals residing in South Africa. The 34-year-old suspect, originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, had been evading law enforcement by frequently changing jobs and locations.

After stealing an FAW truck in June 2024, he relocated to the Free State, continuing his illicit activities.

In a meticulously planned operation, RUSA officers managed to lure the suspect back to KwaZulu-Natal.

Using plain-clothed officers in unmarked vehicles, they tracked the suspect and observed him for several hours this morning.

Once positively identified, the suspect was apprehended without incident.

The successful arrest marks a significant victory in the fight against truck theft syndicates operating in South Africa.

The suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including theft and evasion of law enforcement.

The truck and its load, however, remain missing.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the truck to come forward.

This arrest highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration in tackling organized crime.
